Pre-flight preparation is always a must!
An unfortunate accident occurred in August 2021 near Buttonville airport, anorthern suburb of Toronto. An instructor and his student pilot were on a training flight in a Cessna 172 and were about to land.
A drone piloted by a York Regional Police officer on a mission there collided with the Cessna 172. The impact was so severe that the pilots thought they had hit a large bird.
Fortunately, there was only material damage and no injuries. The aircraft sustained considerable damage to the propeller, engine cowling and airbox.
Accordingto the investigation report, the drone did not have prior authorization to be so close to the airport. Neither Nav Canada nor air traffic controllers were aware of its presence. What's more, the drone pilot was not in radiocommunication on the airport's frequency.
