A British Columbia Film Company and Drone Operator Fined $30,000 for Illegal Drone Use to Film Killer Whales
On July 2, 2024, a film company pleaded guilty to the illegal use of a drone to film a group of Northern resident killer whales at close range on a Vancouver Island beach, where they are known to rub their bellies. These killerwhales move towards the shallow waters near the shore and then rub against the smooth pebbles below. It is believed that this activity helps them shed deadskin, strengthen group bonds, and enjoy a massage.
This is the first time a fine has been imposed in Canada for the illegal use of a drone to film killer whales. Drones, considered aircraft, can disturb marine mammals.
The film company was fined $25,000 and was prohibited from using ordistributing the footage filmed by the drone. As for the drone operator, they were fined $5,000.
